DRY NEEDLING

What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a skilled technique performed by a PT in which sterile filiform needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (painful knots in muscles). The procedure is an important tool for diagnosing, treating, and monitoring changes in tissue that may be associated with one or more injuries/conditions. During the procedure, a very thin, solid filament is inserted into the tissue, and the needle stimulates a healing pathway in the musculoskeletal tissue.

Is Dry Needling Safe?

DN is very safe; however, like any treatment, there are possible complications. Minor bleeding or bruising may occur in 15-20% individuals post-treatment, and is considered normal. Drowsiness, tiredness, or dizziness may occur in 1-3% individuals post-treatment. Serious side effects can occur in less than 1 per 10,000 treatments. While these complications are rare, they must be considered prior to giving consent for DN treatment.

Dry Needling versus Acupuncture?

Dry Needling is the name given to treatment of pain and dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system, using sterile disposable acupuncture needles. Although acupuncture needles are used to practice DN, classical acupuncture and DN are not the same.
