What will happen the first time I come to an appointment?
Initial evaluations are a ‘get-to-know-you’ time. Besides signing a consent and helping Dr. Shoup understand your past medical history and your current problem, this is a time for us to listen to what you need and ultimately see if our clinic and services are what you truly need. If so, we will proceed to treatment. Usually, the goal of the first time is to lay the foundation of the treatment you need. It’s about what YOU need.
What to wear?
Be comfortable. You are bringing your body to be treated.
How is physical therapy paid for?
Usually the visits are covered, completely or in part, by insurance programs. We are a medicare provider and we are in-network with most health insurance carriers. With so many different plans out there, and if you aren’t sure what your plan covers, we recommend calling your carrier. We can help navigate this as well. When Dr. Shoup was asked, how PT is paid for, he said , "I’ll trade chickens or barter service, if needed! I just want to make physical therapy available to those who need it."
Do I need a prescription?
North Carolina is a ‘direct access’ state. You can see a physical therapist without a prescription. However, Dr. Shoup will always try to work with your primary physician as part of the team that keeps you healthy. After he evaluates, he usually sends the plan of care to your medical doctor and will keep your MD informed of the progress you make. Dr. Shoup has been a ‘team player’ from day one, he can help you navigate the needed medical services that will get you results.
